The moral of this story is that to relax, you may need to avoid doing the first thing you feel like doing, or the easiest thing. Sometimes, even, relaxation needs just a little bit of discipline, a little bit of effort. Don’t collapse in front of the TV, don’t reach for the nearest magazine, and for heaven’s sake don’t surf the net. Lie on your back in a quiet room and listen to some music. Meditate. Do yoga or T’ai Chi. Have a sauna. These are things which bring relaxation, deep relaxation. Sometimes the reason why we can’t relax is that we spend the time we could use to relax distracting ourselves. Relaxation brings you back to yourself, distraction takes you away from yourself.
