Latest News - USA Today; UK tomorrow?
For better or for worse, what is happening in the USA now, will be finding its way to the UK before too long. Or at least so it is said. Let’s hope this is true for the recent set of guidelines of the American College of Physicians on the treatment of low back pain. This body strongly recommends acupuncture as a first choice treatment for chronic low back pain (i.e. back pain lasting more than 12 weeks); it wants American doctors to go first to acupuncture (or other forms of treatment not involving drugs, such as mindfulness based stress reduction). Pharmaceutical drugs like anti-inflammatories should only be turned to for patients who do not respond to non-drug based treatment.
These guidelines are based on a rigorous review of the highest quality evidence available, which finds that acupuncture is more effective than drug treatment both in providing pain relief and in improving function.
The College similarly recommends acupuncture for acute low back pain (i.e. back pain which has lasted less than 4 weeks), although it recognises that the evidence base for acupuncture here is weaker than for chronic back pain. Still better than drugs though!
